District Judge Dane Watkins Jr. sentenced Hernan Cortes, 30 to serve a minimum of two years and up to 10 years in prison Monday.

Cortes was first arrested for robbery in March. According to court records, Cortes threatened to shoot the victim and told them to give him everything they had on them. No gun was seen or found in Cortes’ possession.

The victim complied and Cortes threatened them a second time, telling the victim he was involved with a gang and telling them to not call police.

Cortes was arrested the next day after police received a tip he was staying at a local homeless shelter.

The sentencing was the result of a plea deal in which the court dismissed two misdemeanor assault charges that had been filed against Cortes in a 2021 case.

Cortes was given credit for 257 days he had already served in jail during the case. He was ordered to pay $1,245.50 in fines and fees.
