Daniel Bruton of Rexburg wins boys high jump

    Daniel Bruton, a senior from Rexburg won the boys high jump at the 2014 Simplot Games with a jump of 6 feet 7 inches.

    Coming from Rexburg, Bruton is glad to have such a great meet so close to home.

    “At night I get to go home to my own bed and get a good night’s sleep,” said Bruton. “Most people get really stressed out about Simplot Games track meet, but I am really calm about it. I come to just have fun.”

    Bruton didn’t care if he won once he started the “jump-off”for first place.

    “I was just having fun by then. I didn’t care if I won or lost,”he said.

    As a senior, this is Bruton’s third year competing at Simplot Games and he hopes to continue to compete for years to come in college and maybe beyond.

Alex Lawerence of Kuna wins boys pole vault

    Alex Lawerence, a senior from Kuna, won the boys pole vault at the 2014 Simplot Games with a mark of 14 feet, 6 inches.

    Lawerence was glad to win, but was a little disappointed he didn’t break his personal record of 14’11”.

    “I was feeling really good today, and was really excited to compete. I thought for sure I would break my personal record,” he said.

    Track and field is Lawerence’s favorite sport.

    “My mom got me to try out for track when I was a sophomore, and I have loved it ever since. I was a little apprehensive to try out, but I am glad my mom pushed me to,” Lawerence said, “I am here because of my mom.”

    As a senior, Lawerence is planning on attending Utah State University in the fall and will hopefully continue with the sport he loves.

YMCA Team Idaho ‘B’ and Trojan Track Club win All-Idaho 4x200 relays

    YMCA Team Idaho ‘B’ of Boise won the boys all Idaho 4x200 relay, and Trojan Track Club of Rigby was victorious on the girls side at the 2014 Simplot Games.

    The All-Idaho 4x200 relays give Idaho relay teams a chance to shine in the spotlight during the meet held in their home state. It also gives Idaho athletes bragging rights among teams from across the state.

    YMCA Team Idaho ‘B’ included Kevin Wang, senior, Cory Mullinax, sophomore, Nick Ross, junior, and Karsten Niederer, senior. The boys were happy about their win and that they represented their team.

    “We run together in races and in practices all the time,” says Mullinax. “We are a bunch of schools but come together for this team.”

    Trojan Track Club girls included Elsja Mecham, sophomore, Hailey Stone, junior, Keanne Alston, junior, and Chayse Eames, senior.

    “The competition here is on a completely different level,” says Eames.

    “We worked really hard, we wanted this,” said Stone.
