Rockland 40, Mackay 32

    Off a stellar defensive performance as a team and a 16-point offensive output from Rex Permann, the Rockland Bulldogs held off Mackay 40-32.

    Zach Freeman tacked on 11 points for Rockland as a defensive battle ensued, and it wasn’t until the fourth quarter Rockland head coach Scott Lish felt comfortable.

    Credit Permann for that.

    “Overall we had a great defensive game all night,” Lish said. “We kept things really even, and running into that last quarter, it was a new game. We just came out really strong and outlasted them.”

    Permann had six points in the final period to help the Bulldogs put the Miners away.

    Rockland (6-5) hosts Calvary Chapel Tuesday.

Malad 57, Aberdeen 30

    Malad’s Nishon Neal exploded for 24 points to help Malad cruise against Aberdeen in a 57-30 win.

    It was a complete team effort for the Dragons as they set the pace against the Tigers.

    “When (Aberdeen) kind of shot us down (inside) there we kicked back out,” said Malad head coach Sheldon Vaughan. “Everybody contributed. I was proud of my guys. They stepped it up on defense during the second half and played well.”

    Malad (8-3, 2-0 2A 5th District) travels to Ririe Friday.

Rich (Utah) 64, West Side 50

    Two Pirates scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to outlast Rich (Utah) in a 64-50 defeat.

    Matt Turnbow led West Side with 14 points, Wyatt Beckstead poured in 13 and Josh King had nine. Despite the loss, it was the effort that gave West Side Tyler Brown optimism.

    “The effort was there tonight,” he said. “Last two games we played, the effort wasn’t there. But tonight the effort was there for our kids, and I’m proud of them for showing they could at least play basketball.”

    West Side (2-7) hosts Grace Wednesday.

North Gem 61, Raft River 46

    Raft River entered the fourth quarter with hopes to rally from a decent-sized eight-point deficit.

    North Gem doused their fire quickly.

    The Cowboys used a 20-point fourth quarter to smash Raft River 61-46.

    Cache Davids had 23 points to lead the game in scoring, and Jay Sievers and Karson Lloyd both registered double-doubles with 10 points and 14 rebounds apiece.

    “We played good, hard-nosed man, and the game plan was to slow it down and  not get in a track meet,” said North Gem head coach Charley Kator. “We just slowed the game down, executed and took care of  business.”

    North Gem (8-4, 5-1 1A D2 5th District) hosts Sho-Ban Thursday.

Grace 52, Hagerman 49

    Grace held on to quell Hagerman’s rally in the fourth quarter in a 52-49 win.

    “(Hagerman) hit some big 3s in the fourth quarter,” said Grace head coach Rory Lloyd. “We did a pretty good job defending all night. ... We stepped up and made some free throws when we needed to. The kids played hard on the road and got a win.”

    Grace’s Colton Kladdis led all scorers with 18 points.

    Grace (6-4) hits the road to take on West Side Wednesday.
