The Pocatello girls erased a fourth-quarter deficit to shock Burley 47-44 in the opening round of the 4A state tournament Thursday evening at Mountain View High School.

    Missing two starters, the Indians got a team-high 15 points from both Brooke Pierce and Allie Parker to pull off the upset.

    Pocatello was down 29-19 at the half, but held the Bobcats to four points in the third quarter while scoring 17 of its own.

    The Indians also allowed just two scorers to account for most of Burley’s points. Chelsee Baker had 19 and Aubrie Vale had 16.

    Carly Parker chipped in nine points for Pocatello, which will face Bishop Kelly today at 8 p.m. at Mountain View High School.

Snake River 43, Priest River 30

    The Snake River girls took down Priest River 43-30 in the opening round of the 3A state basketball tournament Thursday afternoon at Skyview High School in Nampa.

    With the win, the Panthers advance to the semifinals where they will take on Parma, who defeated Bonners Ferry 41-40.

    It was close early as the Spartans clung to a 12-10 after the first quarter. But the Panthers took over, outscoring their opponents from the north 15-3 in the second to grab an advantage they would not relinquish.

    Snake River outscored Priest River 16-10 in the third and settled back on defense to close out the victory.

    Steffie Pavey paced Priest River with 10 points while Kelsie Fink had six.

    Despite senior Madison Pilster scoring just two points, the Panthers got more than enough production from Makena Shelley, who notched 17 on the afternoon. Brylie Bair added nine while Kylie Coby had seven.

    Snake River and Parma tip off today at 6:15 p.m. at Skyview High School.

Soda Springs 42, Marsing 27

    The Soda Springs girls began the 2A state tournament with a 42-27 victory over Marsing Thursday afternoon at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise.

    The Cardinals held the Huskies to single digit scoring in the first three quarters and took a 30-16 lead into the fourth.

    They then outscored Marsing 17-10 to close out the victory.

    Ashley Hull led the Huskies with nine points.

    Katelynn Monk led all scorers with 10 points for Soda Springs. Markee Kimball added eight while Anndee Neuman and Cierra Simmons had seven apiece.

    The Cardinals will take on Grangeville today at 6:15 p.m., also at Bishop Kelly.

Grace 48, Rimrock 35

    Grace began its state title quest with a resounding 48-35 victory over Rimrock Thursday evening at Columbia High School in Nampa.

    The Grizzlies overcame a 14-6 deficit after the first quarter by outscoring the Raiders 18-7 in the second. But the biggest Grace run came after the half when the team’s defense stifled Rimrock and allowed just two points.

    Grace played even in the fourth, more than enough to earn the opening round 1A Div-I win.

    Kyla Jewette led the Raiders with 12 points.

    Mackenzie Windley notched a game-high 17 points for the Grizzlies. Stephanie also reached double figures, scoring 11 points in the win.

    Grace takes on Lapwai today at 8 p.m. at Columbia High School.

Rockland 47, Deary 42

    Rockland returned to the 1A Div-II state tournament with a bang.

    The Bulldogs defeated Deary 47-42 Thursday evening at Nampa High School to earn a spot in today’s semifinals.

    “We jumped out and never were behind,” said Rockland head coach Vern Nelson. “They stormed back on us. They’re post player got going in the second half.”

    Rockland led 35-22 heading into the fourth quarter, but had to withstand a Mustang comeback to prevail. Deary outscored the Bulldogs 20-12 in the final period.

    “We had enough built up in the first three quarters to hold them off,” Nelson said. “We hit some key free throws as well down the stretch.”

    Savanah Farr had a huge night for Rockland as she scored a game-high 19 points in the win. Tiffini Lee added 13 and Jessie Bott had seven.

    “Defensively, Jessie and Savanah held their post player in check most of the night,” Nelson said. “Savanah had six steals down there.

    “We had a lot of kids involved. It was a great team effort.”

    The Bulldogs take on Kendrick today at 3 p.m. at Nampa High School.
