Pocatello head coach Joe Green is trying everything.

    He’s mixing up lineups, rotating defenses and playing 10 different guys. Green is searching for anything that could spark the Indians.

    But against the aggressive Grizzlies, none of it mattered as Skyline trounced Pocatello 58-36 Saturday at The Palace.

    “Have to give credit to them,” Green said. “They came in and played physical and we didn’t respond to their level of physicality. We didn’t play well and they played really well.”

    Skyline (2-2, 1-1 5A 5-6 District) shot 20 for 41 (52.5 percent) from the floor and Pocatello (1-4, 0-2 4A 5-6 District) hit 10 of its 49 attempts (20 percent).

    The Indians kept it close early, trailing 16-11 after the opening eight minutes, but the Grizzlies clamped down defensively and held Poky to 13 points in the second and third quarters combined.

    “We don’t have a lot of chemistry and not a lot of rhythm on offense,” Green said. “I feel like every time we’re shooting right now we’re pretty fearful we’re going to miss.”

    In the first half, Pocatello went to a zone defense to stem Skyline’s offensive momentum. The Grizzlies play at a fast pace and look to penetrate to the rim whenever there’s an opening. And the Indians found some success slowing them down.

    But when Pocatello went searching for a rally in the third quarter, none materialized. Skyline shot out of the break on a 14-3 run, blowing a 28-18 game into a 42-21 rout.

    “We were hoping to get better ball movement right out of that third quarter, get some easy buckets ... and get a couple stops on defense,” Green said. “That just didn’t happen.”

    Sophomore Mason Baker and senior Zak Bennett both scored 13 for the Grizzlies. Junior David Reichelt led the Indians with eight.

    Since defeating Canyon Ridge Dec. 5, Pocatello has lost its last three, all at home and all by double digits.

    “That’s life. When things don’t go your way you can’t just give up and quit,” Green said. “Right now, we’re struggling and we’re going to keep just working as hard as we can and keep the kids up and believing in themselves.”

    Pocatello hosts Madison Wednesday.
