POCATELLO — It’s the start of a long summer. So there’s no reason to overreact to any single facet of Wednesday’s game at Halliwell Park.

The Pocatello Razorbacks took down the Pocatello Rebels 11-0 in a Single-A Legion nonconference baseball game, the first of the season.

Both the Rebels and Razorbacks have an entire season’s worth of games to go, and each is firmly focused on what’s next. The Rebels host the Idaho Falls Tigers for a doubleheader Friday, and the Razorbacks take on the Idaho Falls Bees Saturday at home.

Wednesday night was a time for a dress rehearsal, a point to find out what looks good, what doesn’t and what must improve.

For the Razorbacks, the pitching looked good — very good. Junior Dillon Chandler (Highland) was on the bump for three innings, striking out four while not giving up a hit.

Chandler was in command and dominant.

Razorback coach Russ Davie said the plan was to limit the right-hander’s innings to two or three, and he never considered modifying the plan just because Chandler had a no-hitter brewing.

Chandler didn’t have a problem with it. The short outing sets up the opportunity to get back on the mound later this week. In fact, Chandler was more focused on following Davie’s game plan.

“Just don’t walk anyone and get outs with ground balls and pop flys,” Chandler said. “A lot of walks end up in a lot of runs. That’s how it always is, especially leadoff walks. If you just eliminate those, you eliminate a lot of runs.”

Chandler’s teammates provided all the offense he needed to pick up the win. Spencer Bray clocked an RBI single to right field in the first inning and Jarod Nalley followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.

After tacking on a run in the second, the Razorbacks blew the game open with a seven-run third frame — highlighted by RBIs from Austin Aguinaga, Trent Cooper, Bray, Junior Davie and Justin Frazier.

Up 10-0 through three, the Razorbacks kicked it into cruise control.

“We came out and made the routine play,” Davie said. “That was the biggest thing.”

Where the Razorbacks were satisfied with the opening innings, Rebels coach Jake Lewis only saw things his squad has to clean up.

The Rebels committed seven errors and each of them were in the first three frames. Some of it was nerves, Lewis thought.

“They had to prove something. They weren’t playing relaxed,” Lewis said. “They were playing trying to prove something, which took them out of their game.”
