The Highland baseball team wrapped up a perfect district season with a doubleheader sweep of Hillcrest Saturday in Idaho Falls.

    The Rams defeated the Knights 6-2 and 13-1 to secure a 12-0 mark against 5A Fifth-Sixth District teams.

    “They’re pretty happy,” Highland head coach Mike Green said of his players. “It was a pretty big accomplishment for us.”

    Green said this is his first time as the Rams’ head coach to go undefeated in conference.

    “Aaron (Pope) and Greg (Casperson) pitched well both games,” he said. “Zach Arzola hit a couple home runs and the bottom of our order — Mitch (Guiberson), Greg (Gwinn) and Christian (Atkinson) — had some pretty big hits.”

    Beginning Monday, Skyline and Idaho Falls will play a three-game series to determine who gets the fourth seed in the district tournament. Highland gets the winner Monday, May 6 at Halliwell Park.

    Green is not a fan of having to wait eight days before playing.

    “I don’t like the time off,” he said. “It’s a motivation factor for us. We’ll keep it going. We’re peaking right now. We have to make sure it carries over in a week.”

    No. 2 Hillcrest and No. 3 Madison will also face off May 6.

Softball

Bear Lake 11, Malad 1, 5 inn

    With her third home run in two days, RiLee Lutz and the Bear Lake Bears knocked off Malad 11-1 in five innings Saturday in Montpelier.

    The Bears (16-2, 5-0, 3A Fifth District), with one game left in the regular season, stepped out of conference action to play the Dragons, and Lutz was part of an offense that punched out 12 hits, a home run and five doubles.     

    Lutz also struck out five at the plate.

    Bear Lake finishes its season at home against American Falls Wednesday. The 3A Fifth District tournament starts Friday in American Falls.
