What has been called Monday Morning Quarterback in the past — a story that grades the Idaho State football team’s performance from the weekend before — will appear Tuesday morning and will now be called “Grading the Bengals.” Regardless of the name, the premise remains the same.

    Idaho State traveled to Logan, Utah, Saturday a confident team as it had high hopes of taking down 1-10 Weber State while also ending its 44-game road losing streak. Things did not go the Bengals’ way as they were pounded by a violent wind and Wildcats 32-7. Here are grades for each area of Idaho State’s team in regards to how they performed against Weber State.

OFFENSE:

    ISU’s offense was not designed to perform in windy conditions, which is precisely what it faced Saturday at Stewart Stadium. Ogden was under a high wind warning, and it showed as the Bengals were forced to abandon their game plan. Redshirt junior quarterback Justin Arias threw for 80 yards and two interceptions on 11-of-24 passing, by far his lowest output of the season. Idaho State went to its running game, and had marginal success. The Bengals had 131 total yards on the ground, 103 from sophomore Xavier Finney on 27 carries. He scored the lone ISU touchdown, which came in the first quarter. The Bengals scored seven points against a Weber State defense that was allowing over 44 points per game coming in. They also committed five turnovers.

GRADE: F

DEFENSE:

    ISU’s defensive plan coming in was to make Weber State as one-dimensional as possible, which is exactly what happened. Quarterback Austin Chipoletti threw for just 34 yards and completed four passes, one of which went for a touchdown. The Bengals may have been able to outscore their opponent in normal weather conditions, but they didn’t. Instead the Wildcats took advantage of a shell-shocked Idaho State squad and racked up 283 yards on the ground. Josh Booker (139) and Bo Bolen (106) both reached the century mark on the day. ISU did force two turnovers on the day. Weber State entered the game scoring just 14 points a game. Idaho State surrendered 32.

GRADE: D-

SPECIAL TEAMS:

    Brendon Garcia connected on his long field goal attempt, giving him 25 PAT makes on 28 attempts this year. The Bengals got two long returns against Weber State, one from senior Cameron Gupton (34 yards) and the other from redshirt freshman K.W. Williams (17 yards). The special teams unit was solid for Idaho State on a windy Saturday afternoon.

GRADE: A

COACHING:

    Head coach Mike Kramer said he felt his team had an upper hand heading into Saturday’s game. And, for a moment, it appeared the Bengals would be able to go neck-and-neck with the Wildcats. Whether it was wind, fatigue from a long season with no bye week or the opponent, Idaho State ended its 2013 season on a whimper against a poor Weber State squad. Simply put, the Bengals were not prepared for whatever it was that ailed them at game time.
