As I have already shared, the top response to my question, “What area does the Idaho State football team need to address first as it looks to improve next season?” was the defensive line.

    I tend to agree with that assessment, and it’s not because there was a lack of talent or effort at that position. I just think the issues came from a lack of size, as head coach Mike Kramer was saying all season.

    Think about this: Idaho State’s biggest available defensive lineman against Weber State in the final game of the season was either David Forester or Sage Warner (a former offensive lineman) at 6-foot-2, 255 lbs. Weber’s smallest offensive lineman was back up left guard Tevia Tolutau, also 6-foot-2, 255 lbs.

    I understand that offensive linemen are generally bigger than their counterparts on defense, but the disparity is unheard of. The Bengals were getting toasted at the line of scrimmage almost every play, leaving the inexperienced linebackers to step up and make a tackle.

    That didn’t happen until after a large gain, or it didn’t happen at all.

    That brings up the linebackers. I think the young group will be fine. It was just put in a tough position with the lack of production from the front line.

    If Idaho State wants to get better on defense immediately, it will come through bulking up the line through recruiting and the installation of those who redshirted during the 2012 season.

    Now, many of the comments on my blog criticized ISU’s administration. While there are certainly shortcomings in the athletic department and beyond, I don’t think that’s the cause of all the problems for the football team.

    If we’re going to bring up a non-football aspect that Idaho State must improve, I contend facilities is the biggest issue. The Bengals have no practice field, something that will change soon as the grass across from Holt Arena will be made into one.

    I think the issue lies in Holt Arena to begin with. It’s a unique structure, but other than the new turf is severely outdated. The pressbox is subpar as well.

    I understand it’s difficult to get a new stadium built with a lackluster football product, but it must be done simultaneously. If ISU starts to win some games under Kramer, strike the iron while it’s hot. Buy a piece of land either out by Century High School or by the airport and begin construction after the public voices its approval.

    A new stadium would attract recruits and help the team improve.

    I’m sure Kramer is addressing the defensive line issues as you read this.
