After helping his Century High School football to its best season in head Dave Spillett’s three seasons as head coach, senior Aaron Freeman has earned the opportunity to play football in college.

    The Diamondbacks linebacker will continue his playing career at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.

    “I was impressed with their school and the coaches when I went out for a visit,” Freeman said. “I just got a really good feeling about things.”

    Freeman played linebacker and running back while with the Diamondbacks and earned two varsity letters in football and three in track and field.

    The coaches at Black Hills expect Freeman to play middle linebacker, but he could possibly play defensive end as well.

    “I really like the small town feel of the city,” Freeman said of Spearfish. “It reminded me a lot of Pocatello, and it has a lot of outdoor activities which are the types of activities I enjoy when not playing football.”

    Freeman said he plans on majoring in Biology while at Black Hills State.

    Before deciding on Black Hills Freeman sent out about 100 inquires to colleges, before narrowing his list down to five.

    “The recruiting process was terrifying,” Freeman said. “I would check my email three times a day to see if I got any answers from schools, and to see who was interested.”

    Freeman said he had offers to walk-on at Idaho State and received scholarship offers from Montana Western, Southern Oregon and Black Hills State.

    One of the deciding factors in Freeman’s decision was the level of competition.

    Black Hills State was 4-7 in 2012 including a 38-5 loss at ISU.

    The Yellow Jackets are a Division II school the plays in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
