It is no secret that Idaho State volleyball has had its fair share of successes so far this season.

    The Bengals went on an nine-game winning streak, the longest for the program since 1989, and opened Big Sky Conference play 4-0 before falling at Montana State last week.

    While the loss was a disappointment, the Bengals got back into the win column the following night against Montana.

    With rival Weber State in town Wednesday, the Bengals looked to continue their winning ways.

    ISU did just that, overcoming a second-set deficit to down the Wildcats in three sets 25-15, 25-23, 25-19 at Reed Gym.

    “A win is always good no matter what,” Lori Mendenhall said of the match. “I think together we played well as a team and that is always good and it prepared us for Friday and that is always a plus.”

    Unlike previous matches, the Bengals did not have dominating performances from one or two players, but what they did have was a consistent effort from the entire team led by the 10-kill effort of redshirt freshman outside hitter Tressa Lyman.

    “It’s a lot of fun when everyone is playing well; it makes it a lot easier to do your job,” Lyman said. “When you can trust for everyone to be where they are supposed to it allows your game to excel.”

    Lyman leads the Bengals in kills for the season, averaging 3.40 per set, and was a big part of the team’s dominating first-set performance.

    Lyman recorded four kills in the opening set and was big part of the team’s six first-set blocks.

    ISU played well in the opening set, the second set was a bit more of a struggle.

    The Bengals jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead to start the set but unlike in the opening set when the Bengals were able to extend their lead, the Wildcats came back with a rally to take a 15-12 lead, forcing ISU to call a timeout.

    Weber State’s lead swelled to four points late in the set before the Bengals began their own rally.

    After cutting the deficit to 20-18, Mendenhall stepped back to the service and line changing the match.

    Mendenhall served the Bengals to six straight points giving the Bengals a 24-20 lead.

    Lyman ended the set with a kill.

    Mendenhall gave the  609 fans in Reed Gym a little bit of levity.

    With ISU leading 6-3, Mendenhall went for a dig but instead of hitting the ball with her hands it bounced off the side of her head.

    ISU scored off of the rally and Mendenhall was OK after the hit.

    Mendenhall finished the night with 32 assists, five digs and four block assists.

    ISU (12-4, 6-1 Big Sky) travels to Sacramento State for a match Friday. The match begins a t 8 p.m.
