DAY 1 NOTES

Injuries

Senior wide receiver Madison Magnum did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Neither did sophomore offensive lineman Kyle Jones or Boise State transfer receiver Josh Rhinehart.

As always, the Bengals do not discuss injuries. But Mangum did not look seriously injured (for whatever that is worth).

Early quarterback thoughts

— Tanner Gueller had a great summer. He played with confidence and improved decision making during the first practice. Looked great.

— Michael Sanders has a lot of pressure to play well in fall camp after being named the starter last month. So far, so good. Really, though, who the heck knows? It’s early. Sanders connected on some good passes — most notably, a deep bomb over the middle to KW Williams — but also threw two interceptions (one to junior LB Hayden Stout and the other to senior safety Cody Sorensen).

Early freshmen observations

— Running back Ty Flanagan looks outstanding. Has a great physique and looks college ready.

— Along the same lines, Robert Schwenke (6-2, 301) is an impressive looking defensive tackle. Wide receiver Chris Reynolds Jr. is listed at 6-3, 194 pounds and is clearly an elite athlete. Because of who is in front of him, Reynolds likely won’t play this season, but he has a great future.

Position change

Junior Matt Lewis has switched back to the offensive line. Lewis, a 6-foot-3, 363-pound lineman from Judge Memorial High School in Utah, moved to defense in the spring because the Bengals needed bodies. But it looks like with the increased depth on the D-line (from high school freshmen and JC transfers), Lewis will compete for a backup role on offense.
