Simon Baumgardt stepped to the plate Wednesday night with two runners on and a chance to complete an improbable comeback.

His strikeout instead left the Idaho Falls Chukars wondering what might have been in their 10-7 loss to Great Falls.

The Chukars (38-28) found themselves in a 5-0 deficit after just one inning, a deficit that ultimately proved to be too much to overcome. But on three separate occasions, they did find themselves within three runs, including in the ninth inning.

Idaho Falls had its chance after Trevor Rogers drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Benjamin Rosengard scored on a wild pitch with two outs. With Jacob Shanks at third and Grady Morgan at second, Baumgardt came to the plate representing the tying run, but struck out swinging to leave both runners stranded.

Rosengard led the way for the Chukars with three hits, including a triple. Eddie Pelc added two hits and two RBIs in the loss.

Twenty-four hours earlier, it was a completely different story with the Chukars easing to a 13-3 win over the Voyagers.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, they scored 10 unanswered runs over the next three innings and never looked back.

Jacob Shanks had the performance of a lifetime, launching not one, not two, but three home runs that sailed over the outfield walls. It all resulted in a game-high six RBIs.

Johnny Pappas got in on the home-run action that was a part of his two-hit, three RBI evening. Rogers chipped in with two hits as well.

On the mound, Gary Grosjean earned the victory by limiting the Voyagers to just one earned run and two hits while striking out three batters.
