5A DISTRICT 5-6 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Highland qualified seven individuals and two relay teams for state at Thursday and Friday’s 5A District 5-6 championship meet in Rigby.

In girls, freshman Saydree Bell made state in the 100 meters and pole vault. Erica Holt qualified in the 200, Kyleigh Thomas made state in the shot put and discus, Kimberly Hawes qualified in the high jump, and the Rams’ 4x800 and 4x200 relay teams are headed to state. Halli Austin qualified for state in the high jump.

Highland’s 4x800 relay team set a new personal record by 15 seconds. Holt, Bell and Highland’s 4x200 relay also set new personal bests.

“Overall, with how young our team is, I’m super proud and excited for what’s to come,” Highland coach Camille Long said.

In boys, Jared Dixon qualified for state in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Bristin Corrigan is through in the discus and Adam Jones qualified in the triple jump. Sprinter Drake Hill, who entered districts ranked third in 5A this season in the 200 meters and in the top 10 in the 100, suffered an injury and was unable to complete competition.

Highland’s boys and girls both finished third in the team standings. Madison won both team titles. The 5A state meet is May 17-18 at Eagle High School.

4A DISTRICT 4-5 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Preston girls finished second at Thursday and Friday’s 4A District 4-5 track meet at Minico High School.

Preston had no individual or relay champions, but claimed second through fourth in the shot put and finished second in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays.

The Pocatello girls were third and Century’s girls finished fourth. Poky’s Adison Spillett won the 400 meters, teammate Madi Zink won the 300 hurdles, Destiny Harris won the shot put and discus, and the Indians’ sprint medley relay squad was victorious. Century was led by Jacquelyn Christensen’s first-place finish in the high jump. Teammate Shelby Vasas was second.

In the boys meet, Pocatello was fourth, Preston was fifth and Century finished sixth. Poky’s Shane Gard won the 800 and 1,600 meters, and teammate Dallin Bird claimed the 3,200. Pocatello also won the 4x400 and sprint medley relays. Preston was highlighted by second-place finishes from the 4x100 and 4x200 relay squads, plus Taite Priestley in the high jump and Logan Romney in the pole vault. Century’s De’Qua Lang won the shot put.

The Canyon Ridge boys and Twin Falls girls won the team titles. The 4A state meet is May 17-18 at Eagle High School.

3A DISTRICT 5 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Marsh Valley boys and Snake River girls won the 3A District 5 track and field championships Thursday and Friday at William Thomas Middle School in American Falls.

The Eagles’ boys scored 229 points to edge Snake River’s boys (212.5). Marsh Valley won nine individual and relay district titles, including three by senior Troy Wissenbach. The sprinter claimed top honors in the 200 and 400 meters, as well as the long jump. Wissenbach also ran on Marsh Valley’s championship 4x100-meter relay squad. Teammate Aaron Marshall won the triple jump, high jump and ran on the Eagles’ first-place 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Snake River’s Lorenzo High led the Panthers’ boys with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200. Wyatt Kearn highlighted American Falls with titles in the discus and shot put.

In the girls meet, Snake River’s Morgan Sensenbach (400, 800), Reagan Van Orden (1,600, 3,200), Sage Stimpson (100 hurdles, high jump) and Kassidee Campbell (long jump, triple jump) all won multiple individual titles to help the Panthers score 250 points. Elizabeth Michaelson led Marsh Valley’s girls with wins in the shot put and discus. American Falls’ Emma Barclay won the 300-meter hurdles.

The 3A state meet is May 17-18 at Middleton High School.

SOFTBALL

JEROME 7, POCATELLO 1

Pocatello lost 7-1 at Jerome in the 4A District 4-5 championship game Friday.

The Tigers jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning before taking a 6-1 lead with a three-run third inning.

The Indians tallied four hits and no Poky player had more than one.

The Indians (16-10-1) face the No. 1 seed from District 1-2 in the 4A state tournament May 17 at Coeur d’Alene High School.

BASEBALL

BURLEY 2, POCATELLO 1

Pocatello fell one win short of making the 4A state tournament, losing 2-1 at Burley on Friday in 4A District 4-5’s third-place game.

The score was tied 1-1 entering the sixth inning before Burley took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.

“All in all, had a pretty good season. Just didn’t end the way we wanted it to,” Indians coach Vinnie Benavidez said. “Their kid threw the ball well and we just didn’t capitalize. We left a lot of runners on and that came back to haunt us.”

Poky left 10 runners on base, compared to four by Burley.

Indians pitcher Payton Cleaves had a team-high two hits, plus he had 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits on the mound in a complete game.

Pocatello finished the season 15-12.
