Since 1947, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program has been bustling along at full steam in order to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas.

    The program coordinator for Eastern Idaho, Phillip Hartman, expects to fill the stockings of about 3,000 children this year. That number is up by 800 compared to 2011.

    “I can't imagine any parent not having any money at Christmas time,” Hartman said. “Giving a brand new toy to a kid can give them hope, and they realize people care about them.”

    The former marine starting volunteering his time seven years ago.

    “My wife and I started out with the program delivering packages to kids,” Hartman explained. “Since then my involvement became more prominent. I worked closely with the coordinator before me. He got too sick to oversee the program.”

    Toys for Tots applications will be accepted through Dec. 24. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible.

    Forms can be obtained at all Pocatello/Chubbuck School District 25 schools, the Department of Health & Welfare office and at the Idaho State University Veteran’s Sanctuary in Pocatello.

    In Blackfoot, they can be picked up at the job service office, the Department of Health & Welfare location and the American Legion building.

    Those who live in Bear Lake, Caribou, Power and Franklin counties can request an application by dialing (208) 242-8949.

    “It can be an emotional exchange when we drop off the gifts,” Hartman said. “The children are so grateful. That is part of why I like to do this so much. I like to see the relief on the parents faces too.”

    The Chubbuck resident said he knows what it is like to fall on hard times.

    “I understand what they are going through,” Hartman said. “It is not the kids fault when a job is lost. I use this (Toys for Tots) experience as a lesson for my kids. They really clue in to the meaning of giving.”

    Unwrapped toys can be dropped off at varying area businesses through Dec. 24. A box is located at the Idaho State Journal office, 305 S. Arthur Ave.
