SODA SPRINGS — Mitch Peterson is still trying to wrap his head around what it feels like to be on the winning side of a $1 million lottery ticket.

The Soda Springs resident said Jan. 7 was the first time he and his wife, Tasha, had purchased a ticket in more than five years.

“I was at home when I found out,” Peterson said. “It felt surreal.”

As the numbers continued to match, the disbelief set in fast, leading to both of them scanning the ticket multiple times to double-check.

“It definitely didn’t feel real,” Tasha said.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Soda Springs Maverik. Store manager Kevin Sorensen said he found out the big news six days later but didn’t know who the winner was.

“I found out it was Mitch in the days following,” Sorensen said. “I was so excited for him and his family. It created quite the buzz around the store resulting in a lot more people buying lottery tickets. We have never seen a jackpot that high in the store. It’s really cool and the whole community shared in that excitement.”

Peterson said his family’s reactions made the moment even sweeter.

“My dad was stunned and could hardly believe the news. He was overwhelmed with happiness,” Peterson said.

The family celebrated that night, but the reality of the win is taking weeks to truly sink in.

“It still feels like… why me?” Peterson said.

Despite the life-changing jackpot, daily life hasn’t changed much for Peterson.

“I’m still just living regular life,” Peterson said. “Everyone’s been super nice and supportive.”

More than anything, the win represents something simple.

“Security,” Peterson said.

Peterson said it’s not going to make them retirement-ready anytime soon, but practical plans for some financial security will now allow them to purchase a new truck, make some home renovations and perhaps relax and add in a little fun along the way.

The response from the community has been positive and supportive.

“More people are congratulating me than asking for anything,” Peterson said with a laugh.
