POCATELLO — The school board has decided to close a century-old elementary school near Idaho State University.

The board voted 3-2 during a crowded Tuesday night meeting to shut down Washington Elementary School on South 10th Avenue.

Board members Raymond Knoff, Megan Furniss and Deanna Judy voted in favor of closing Washington, while board members Heather Clarke and Jim Facer voted against.

The school has fallen victim to School District 25's declining enrollment, which has especially impacted its 13 elementary schools.

Dozens of people packed into the board's meeting room at the district offices on Tuesday night to find out if Washington or Tendoy elementary schools would be shut down or if the board would table the decision until a later date.

The board decided to spare Tendoy and instead close one of the oldest schools in the district. 

The Washington Elementary Advocates, the grassroots organization that formed with the goal of saving the school, said after Tuesday night's meeting that it is not going away. Its members plan to preserve the Washington Elementary School building and possibly turn it into a charter school. 

So although Washington will close its doors in June, the school's story seems like it could perhaps continue.
