BANCROFT — North Gem School is set to have a new top administrator starting in July.

Kyler Miller said he's inspired by the opportunity to start his new role as North Gem's principal.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me and I couldn't be more excited about it," he said.

Miller has a master's degree in education and is currently a computer science teacher at Irving Middle School in Pocatello. He has also taught as a graduate assistant at Idaho State University.

"Between ISU and Irving, I have been in education for six years," he said.

Miller said he is looking forward to getting to know everyone at North Gem and the Bancroft community.

He said he hopes to help the school expand its technology.

"I want to show them the tech portion of what school has become," he said. "I want to show that's the way the future is going in education."

Miller said he hopes to help North Gem students learn how to navigate online education. He plans to create an online platform that students can use to turn in assignments and manage their time.

"Education is moving more into the digital world," he said. "A lot of programs are either online or half in person and half online. I want students to be able to navigate the online systems of education."

Miller said he's also excited to get to know the students at North Gem, a unique school in Idaho in that it houses students in grades K-12 all under one roof. He said he will be going from a middle school with around 750 students to a school with only 130 students.

"I'll get to know each student in the school," he said. "It's really exciting to build a relationship with those kids and to watch them grow from kindergarten to graduation."

Miller said building relationships with the students is his favorite part about being a teacher.

"I love seeing the growth of the kids," he said. "Having the ability to see where they can go and watching them gain that confidence and taking off is awesome."

Miller will replace Dr. Todd Shumway, who is leaving North Gem to serve a mission in New Zealand with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
