A 56-year-old pilot was injured in a Monday afternoon plane crash that occurred while he was spraying agricultural chemicals in a field in Bancroft, a city in Caribou County.

Curtis E. Hill of Somerton, Arizona, was flying a 1977 Piper PA36 Brave for Hill AG Air out of Malad, when the plane lost lift shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to Caribou County sheriff’s officials.

Hill immediately tried to dump the agricultural chemicals to gain lift, but was unable to, and the plane struck the hillside just west of 2629 Kelly Toponce Road, sheriff’s officials said. The crash started a fire, but the chemicals onboard quickly extinguished the flames.

Hill was transported by ground ambulance to Caribou Memorial Hospital in Soda Springs with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s officials said.

The sheriff’s office and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident.
