Authorities say a reckless driver crashed head-on into another vehicle near Broncho Road along U.S. Highway 91 seven miles south of Blackfoot Monday night. The other driver, identified as Richard “Tazzy” Peyope, died at the scene of the accident.
According to Idaho State Police, Jody Underwood, 39, of Blackfoot, was driving a 1992 Buick at a high rate of speed around 9:50 p.m. when Fort Hall Police received a tip.
Before Fort Hall officers could locate the reported reckless driver, the collision occurred and caused both vehicles to catch on fire. Fort Hall officers indicated they were only able to pull one of the male drivers out to safety.
Underwood was flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls by medical helicopter and later to University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City. His condition was unavailable at press time.
The highway was blocked to all through traffic for over six hours while debris was cleared from the roadway.
FHPD detectives are the lead investigators regarding this accident. Once the investigation is complete, a report will be submitted to the U.S Attorney’s office for review. Moreover, Underwood could face criminal charges.
Idaho State Police assisted Fort Hall Police Department officers. Peyope, 45, was a Shoshone-Bannock tribal member.

U know these white people will never be held accountable for killing our two tribal members cause we r indian. And if it was a indian killing a white person they will be crying around about us and pointing fingers like white people do best.
FHPD better put Federal Charges on her! And not give her a slap on the wrist! She needs to be held accountable for her reckless actions and devestation that was caused to a Tribal Member and his family!
