This week notice was given that former Montpelier City Police Chief. Don Law passed away.

Law came to work for Montpelier it 1984 as a police officer under Chief Gary Mills. When Chief Mills moved on to another job, Law was appointed Chief on September 3, 1985.

Law chooses to come to Montpelier because he wanted to work in a smaller town.

He is quoted as saying" I think everybody here is more friendly, since we know everybody and everybody knows it is a deterrent to people who might commit wrongdoing. It is easier to do those things against people you don't know. :" in small towns as far as the police officers the people we do arrest become a concern. You don't just throw them in jail and forget about them. Because we have to live with them, we care."

Law continued to work as the Chief until June of 1992. He went on to Caldwell Idaho to work as chief there. He later moved to Mesquite, Nv. and was their Chief of Police until the time he retired from law enforcement. Mesquite police dept. stated that Chief Law is a great leader and his legacy and example of serving this department with kindness, respect, and honor will forever continue.

Following his retirement, he was recruited by the U.S. State Department to serve as Public Safety Liaison in Central America, being stationed in Panama for two years.

Several of the officers that Law worked within Montpelier held him in high regard.

Past Chief Dave Higley stated, "Doug was always great to work with." Sheriff Brent Bunn said, " Doug was a great guy. He cared about people he was easy to work with".

Doug was admired everywhere he worked, and his memory will live on.
