MACKAY — A Monday morning double-fatal crash in Mackay left U.S. Highway 93 completely shut down for nine hours.

The collision occurred at approximately 10 a.m. when a 61-year-old Challis man driving a 2000 GMC Yukon SUV attempted to turn onto the highway from North 4100 West and failed to yield to a 2022 Allegro motorhome heading southbound on the highway, authorities said.

The Yukon driver and his passenger — a 58-year-old woman from Arco — both died at the scene. The 73-year-old Oak View, California, man driving the motorhome was not injured.

Everyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Idaho State Police said.

Highway 93 remained completely closed because of the crash until around 7 p.m. Monday.

State police were assisted at the scene by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Department of Transportation, South Custer Fire Department and Mackay Fire Department.

The crash remains under investigation by state police.
