De Smet

The Father Pierre-Jean De Smet monument was recently unveiled at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Soda Springs.

   SODA SPRINGS — On Aug. 10, a large crowd gathered for the unveiling of the Father Pierre-Jean De Smet monument next to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Soda Springs.

    The bronze bust was created by artist Val Lewis of Tremonton, Utah, and it depicts four interpretive signs plus a verbal history.

    Father De Smet was in Soda Springs on Aug. 10, 1841, as part of the first Oregon Trail wagon train. The project was part of Idaho’s 150th anniversary.
