IDAHO FALLS —  Employees at Lemons House Moving located at 3980 N. Haroldsen Drive haul any type of unusual object from point A to point B.

    This includes items such as entire houses and large machinery.

    “My uncle founded the company in the late 1930s,” said David Lemons, who co-owns the business with his two sons. “My uncle moved here from Deadwood, South Dakota when the mines petered out. He came to Idaho to move everything next to the American Falls dam up onto a hill.”

    The 75-year-old has been in the moving industry since 1950 thanks to his uncle who showed him the ropes.

    Lemons’ workers incorporate the use of huge trailers, lowboys and dollies to transport large objects.

    “We have a ton of steel beams too,” Lemons added. “We have a pile of them you wouldn't believe to move all of this stuff.”

    Business is currently not as booming compared to the past, according to Lemons. Still, he indicated that crews of 6-8 individuals move over 200 homes a year.

    “The cost is killer anymore to fill up with diesel fuel. We had to raise our prices because of it,” Lemons said. “When it costs $1,200 to fill up a truck, you have to raise the rate or go out of business.”

    These days, the company’s bread-and-butter contracts involve the transportation of double wide trailers.

    “We move them in one piece anymore, whereas we used to separate them into pieces for transport,” Lemons explained. “The reason behind that is people  aren’t big fans of dirt, and the double or triple wide trailers tended to get dirty when they were torn apart and moved. Sometimes we move 2-3 double wides a week.”

    The farthest Lemons House Moving has ever traveled with wide load luggage is to Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

    “We helped set up a fishing village there in 2002,” Lemons recalled. “We took all the modulars and placed them on barges that were shipped on 16 by 16 boxes. We did all the carpenter work to put it together ourselves.”

    Lemons indicated that Incoming contracts from the Jackson, Wyo. area, Northern Utah, Northern Nevada and within the boundaries of Ada County keep their moving machinery in motion.

    “We're booked up through the first of year,” Lemons said. “We are busy, which is good.”
