With lyrics about partying and the blissful excess of youth, and so many tattoos its hard to find an un-inked inch of skin, rock band Buckcherry epitomizes the rock and roll image. But beneath the “bad boy” image, there’s a softer side to vocalist Josh Todd.

Buckcherry will be live in concert this Monday, January 20 at the Idaho Falls Civic Auditorium, 501 S. Holmes Ave. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. with opening bands Dr. Seuss is Dead and Downbeat Sylo, as well as Canadian rock band Monster Truck. Buckcherry rose to fame in 1999 with their self-titled album featuring the hit single “Lit Up.” Their third album, “15” featured the singles “Crazy B****,” “Next to You,” and the ballad “Sorry.” The album was certified platinum in the United States and Canada.

Their fifth effort yielded the singles “Rescue Me,” “It’s a Party” and the title track “All Night Long.”

The group’s most recent album, “Confessions,” released in 2013, features songs named for and about the seven deadly sins, such as “Greed,” “Wrath,” “Envy” and “Lust.”

“We feel like the sins are timeless and that everyone struggles with them at some point in their life, sometimes all of them, so that’s way we started throwing around the concept of doing it. This is our sixth record and we wanted to challenge ourselves and kind of get out of the box and do something different and have a theme going into the songwriting process. As a lyric writer it was really challenging and also really fun,” said Todd in a telephone interview with the Journal.

Buckcherry is not all about partying and rock and roll, they have been able to use their fame to raise awareness and money for the benefit of children affected by child abuse.

They have teamed up with for childhelp.org, a non profit organization that focuses on child abuse prevention, intervention and treatment.

“We organized a show in New York awhile back and we sold it out, we raised $10,000 for foster care, and that was really cool,” said Todd

They also teamed up with Shaq and Betty White to create a public service announcement the organization.

The organization recruited Buckcherry when they heard about the songs “Rescue Me” and “A Child Called It,” both of which appear on the album “Black Butterfly” and were inspired by the book “A Child Called It” and Todd’s own experience with abuse when he was a child.

But when singer Josh Todd is not touring the world with his band and writing hit songs, he is spending time with his wife and kids at their California home.

Todd is married to actress/model Mitzi Martin and the couple have two children. Todd also has an adult daughter from a previous relationship.

Todd makes sure to video chat with his two youngest kids every day while he is on tour. But he has found out that even a rock star cannot always get the undevoted attention of his kids.

“They start getting fed up with me,” he joked,” “it hard to get them to sit still and talk to me. Some times its only like five minutes and sometimes we can get a good 20 minutes in there. But that is the great thing with technology, it has made it that much better, touring for us. I can be clear across the world and sit down with my kids at breakfast and see them.”

Todd says the band is excited to be performing in Southeast Idaho, and that they will be performing all of the “usual suspects.”

Local band Dr. Seuss is Dead will be one of the opening bands. DRSID has been active since the late 90s, and have released two full length albums. This will be the band’s first live performance in more than two years. Members Viktor Wilt on vocals, Joe Hamilton and Joey Labato on guitar, Dan Ditto on drums have recently been joined by David Brave on bass guitar.

Wilt says the band’s absence from the stage can be credited to being busy with other projects, but, they are excited to be back and opening for Buckcherry.

“Everybody is super pumped. This is the perfect show for Dr. Suess to make a return,” said Wilt, “ We sound better than ever,” he continued.
