American Falls lifted its boil water advisory Wednesday morning, bringing an end to a pair of back-to-back water alerts that put two East Idaho communities on notice within 24 hours of each other this week.

Montpelier had already cleared its own advisory Tuesday after water samples collected throughout the distribution system tested negative for contamination and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality gave the all-clear — meaning both cities are now in the clear just days after separate mechanical failures knocked out water pressure across each community.

American Falls issued its advisory Monday morning after a loss of communication with the city’s water system caused a citywide pressure drop below the minimum safe operating level.

City crews worked to restore and stabilize the system, flush the distribution system and conduct water quality testing before lifting the notice Wednesday.

Montpelier’s advisory stemmed from a pump failure Sunday that caused storage tank levels to drop critically low and triggered a citywide loss of pressure.

The advisory was lifted Tuesday after all samples collected throughout the distribution system came back clean and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality authorized the city to end it.

As a precaution following the Montpelier advisory, city officials recommended residents flush household plumbing by running each cold water faucet for five to 10 minutes or until any chlorine odor fades, discard ice made during the advisory and replace water filters if recommended by the manufacturer.

The city temporarily increased chlorine levels in the water system as an added safety measure — residents may notice a slight chlorine smell or taste for a short time as the system returns to normal.
