BLACKFOOT — The Bingham County Humane Society is asking the public for help in covering the medical costs of a Cocker Spaniel mix puppy that was injured after being thrown from a vehicle in the Fort Hall area, and a dilute tortoiseshell cat that was likely hit by a car. 

Both of the animals underwent operations at the Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic in Blackfoot last week, and Bingham County Humane Society officials are now trying to raise roughly $1,300 to help cover the costs. 

Marcia Williams, vice president of the humane society, said a woman contacted the Bingham County Humane Society last week after she saw the puppy thrown from a vehicle in the Fort Hall area.  

Luke Gillespie, a veterinarian at the Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic, said the four-month-old puppy sustained identical fractures in both of its front legs. 

“We got everything pinned back together,” he said, adding that the puppy seems to be doing well right now.

The animal, which Williams said they call Muffin, is currently in a foster home recuperating from her surgery. 

“We know that this was abuse,” Williams said, adding that she hopes the dog will make a full recovery. “It’s too bad people do that.”

The Bingham County Humane Society is also asking for help in covering the surgical expenses for the 1-year-old cat they call Bo Bo.

Gillespie said the cat was likely hit by a car at some point and sustained a femur fracture. The injury healed abnormally and one section of bone was protruding from the skin. 

“She was walking and doing alright, but we (were afraid that it) may become infected,” Gillespie said, adding that they were able to remove the piece of bone so it won’t cause problems in the future. 

Williams said Bo Bo is also missing her ears, which were likely frozen and then removed. 

“We’re hoping that wasn’t an abuse case,” she said. 

Gillespie said it’s not uncommon for outdoor animals to get frostbitten ears, and he thinks that is likely what happened in Bo Bo’s case. 

“It happened a long time ago,” he said, adding that there wasn’t anything they could do to help that.
