As Caribou County Sheriff Ric Anderson described it, Friday was just “another day in Mayberry.” However a bear’s shoulder snagged by a fisherman in Alexander Reservoir and a fertilizer truck dragging a section of fencing did provide some excitement.

    Anderson said photos of the section of bear carcass landed by a local fisherman last Saturday started circulating on Facebook and generated calls to his office.

    “People thought it was human,” Anderson said. “It had hair on the elbows and humans don’t.”

    The chunk of bear remains landed by the fishermen included an intact shoulder blade, forearm and paw.

    “The paw on the bear had the ‘fingers’ posed just like E.T.,” the sheriff said with a laugh.

    As for the fertilizer truck dragging the section of fence, the friction caused sparks along a two-mile section of Lund and Central roads between Grace and Bancroft, and ignited minor fires in the barrow pit. No structures were ever threatened and the fires went out quickly, according to Anderson.
