POCATELLO — After damage caused by a water leak, the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building hopes to remodel the building by the beginning of spring.

Miguel Dominic, historian at the memorial building, said the leak was in the upstairs bathroom area. The water leaked downstairs and caused some damage.

"They're going to have to tear out the walls in the American Legion Room and redo the ballroom floor," Dominic said.

The building, which is located at 300 North Johnson Avenue, was originally built in 1924. It is an old building that requires maintenance so it can continue to be an asset to the community.

"Our purpose with this is so the building can last another 100 years," Dominic said.

Another problem they have discovered with the building is with the subfloor. The building is so old that there are cracks in the subfloor that also need to be repaired.

"Right now, they're taking care of the water," Dominic said. "Once that gets done, they'll start the remodeling of the boards."

The Veterans Memorial Association has started a GoFundMe fundraising campaign that can be found at https://gofund.me/9dd8ec37. The cost of the remodeling was originally going to be $218,000 before they found the problem with the subfloor.

"The subfloor adds an additional $36,000 on top of the $218,000," Dominic said.

Dominic said they also plan to apply for some grants and hold fundraisers to raise the money in addition to the GoFundMe.

"We've got people calling that are wanting to help," Dominic said.

The Bannock County Veterans Memorial Association hopes to have the remodeling completed by the end of March.
