CHUBBUCK — Sheriff’s deputies killed an armed suspect early Friday evening who had fatally shot two people and wounded two others west of Chubbuck, authorities said.

The names of the victims and suspect have not been released, but authorities confirmed at a late Friday night news conference near the scene that “there is no ongoing threat to the community.”

The incident began to unfold around 2:40 p.m. Friday when a 911 caller reported a shooting in the area of Tank Farm and Batiste roads had left two people dead and another wounded.

Law enforcement officers from multiple local agencies immediately responded and began an intense search for the suspect, who had fled the scene on foot.

The wounded individual was transported via ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello while the law enforcement response grew to include helicopters, drones and SWAT officers in armored vehicles.

Most law enforcement agencies in southeast Idaho responded to the scene, and a few hours after the shooting, sheriff’s deputies located the suspect hiding near the Portneuf River.

As deputies approached, the suspect opened fire and struck a person in a boat on the river, authorities said.

The deputies then fatally shot the suspect.

Bannock County stated in a late Friday night news release: “Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect. The suspect presented a threat to deputies, brandishing a firearm, at which point law enforcement responded with deadly force. The suspect died on scene.”

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident, authorities said.

The wounded boater was transported by ground ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Both wounded individuals are recovering. The victim from the original shooting is in stable condition, according to the Bannock County update. The boater struck by the suspect’s gunfire remains hospitalized in stable condition, sources close to the investigation told the Idaho State Journal on Saturday..

The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force is processing the scene near the river. Tank Farm Road, which had been closed, has reopened to traffic.

The Idaho Falls Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that left the suspect dead. The Power County Sheriff’s Office continues to be assisted in the homicide investigation by Idaho State Police, Bingham County and Bannock County.

Authorities have not said which sheriff’s office the deputies who killed the suspect are from. The motive for the shooting and whether the suspect and victims knew each other have not been revealed.

Among the many local law enforcement agencies that responded Friday were sheriff’s deputies from Power, Bannock and Bingham counties; officers from the Blackfoot, Chubbuck, Pocatello and American Falls police departments; and Idaho State Police troopers. Idaho Fish and Game officers also responded, along with emergency helicopters and local EMS units.

“Our thoughts are with the families of those lost today and those recovering in the hospital,” Power County Sheriff Kasey Kendall said in a news release. “We are grateful for the quick response of our deputies and regional partners who worked to ensure no further harm came to our community.”
