IDAHO FALLS — An attached garage to a single-story home on Aegean Avenue in Idaho Falls was lost to fire Tuesday night.

While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the Idaho Falls Fire Department reported the likely cause to be a barbecue grill.

The department reminds residents that barbecuing inside a home, garage or any enclosed space is extremely dangerous, said Hayli Egbert, Idaho Falls Fire spokeswoman. Grills should only be used outdoors in well-ventilated areas, away from homes, garages, decks and other combustible materials.

Using a barbecue indoors can quickly ignite nearby materials, create dangerous carbon monoxide levels and lead to a life-threatening emergency.

The fire department responded to the structure fire call at 8:17 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the home’s attached garage, Egbert said. The occupants had safely evacuated the residence before crews arrived. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The first engine on scene quickly initiated an aggressive fire attack, bringing the garage fire under control. A standard first-alarm assignment responded to the incident, including three engines, one ladder truck, two ambulances and a battalion chief.

Additional crews supplied water to the attack and searched the home for occupants while checking for fire extension. Although smoke had spread into the attic and several rooms inside the residence, firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the garage.

The garage and its contents were declared a total loss.
