If you love quilts as much as you enjoy the American Dog Derby than you’ll want to be in Ashton over Valentine’s weekend.

The third annual Ashton Quilt Show starts on Feb. 13 and continues through Feb. 15 at the Ashton Library located inside the Ashton Community Center located at 925 Main Street. The dog derby will be held on Feb. 14 and 15 where mushers and their dogs will tear down Ashton’s Main Street.

The quilt show starts at 10 a.m. each day and will continue on Feb. 13 until 6 p.m., on Feb. 14 until 7 p.m., and until 1 p.m., on Feb. 15.

Ashton Librarian Cicely Kuehl is overseeing the annual Quilt Show. Kuehl estimated that around 150 people visited the show in 2024, and she expects as many to do so again this year.

Both antique and contemporary quilts will be featured, she said.

“Sometimes you have quilts that are very artistic and very well pieced,” she said. “It’s a complete work of art in itself.”

Kuehl is inviting quilters from throughout the region to enter their quilts into the quilt fair. She will start accepting the comforters on Feb. 10 and will hang them up in the library two days later. Kuehl expects to have up to 30 quilts on display.

“It’s just the amazing work, the time and detail to all the quilts. It’s the variety,” she said. “Some are very serious quilts. Some are very, just fun.”

Quilts entered may be either hand or machine stitched, Kuehl said.

“Most of your hand-quilted quilts are the older quilts,” she said. “There are some people who used to hand quilt and just can’t now because of arthritis. They can still sew the blocks on their machines. There’s a lot of people who like to put the blocks together.”

During the quilt show, visitors will have the chance to enter two raffles for two quilts. The Ashton Quilt Guild provided the quilts to be raffled, Kuehl said.

“The money that’s raised off the raffle comes back to the library,” Kuehl said.

One of the quilts to be raffled is made up of quilt blocks that area quilters created for last year’s event. Another king size quilt has been donated toward this year’s event.

Raffle tickets are $5 each or $20 for five tickets.

Kuehl is also asking area quilters to help with the 2025 quilt block contest.

“The Ashton Library will provide the fabric,” she said. “You use your imagination to make a quilt block and bring it to the library.”
