CHUBBUCK — Professional photographer Bobbi Thomson has a knack for breathing life into frozen memories she captures with her lens.

    The owner of Journey Photography prefers to get to know her subjects before diving in.

    “I listen with my eyes, ears and heart so I can capture that emotion. I encourage families to play, to have dad throw their child in the air,” Thomson explains. “I do my best when working with families that have a lot of little kids. I love shooting in sunny weather.”

    The entrepreneur is teaching a beginning digital single-lens reflex camera course on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Pocatello at Changing Seasons Home & Garden, 3550 U.S. Highway 30. Lunch will be provided.

    “The DSLR course is geared towards parents who want to take better photos of kids for their family scrapbooks,” Thomson says. “It’s a hands-on course, and they will practice with moving children. This is not a post-processing class.”

    She adds: “They are to bring that ‘fancy camera’ with them so they can better understand how to manipulate it. They will learn the basics of exposure, lighting and composition.”

    Thomson first started taking photography seriously ten years ago.

    “It’s fun for me to help people and show them what I know about cameras and how to tell a story through pictures,” she says. “I never intended to start doing this for a living.”

    The mother of five children is a self-taught photographer. She has been working full-time as a photographer for about five years now.

    “It’s a competitive industry,” Thomson says. “But, I think my style is unique enough to make me stand out. I know what families are looking for. As long as people keep calling me, I will keep doing this.”

    Most of Thomson’s business is referral based. She specializes in family shoots and weddings and is willing to travel all over Eastern Idaho and into areas of Northern Utah.

    “I keep it really simple as far as packages go,” Thomson says. “I just offer one with a promise that all of your photos will be beautiful.”

    Thomson is originally from American Falls. She also works part-time as a dental hygienist at Fellows Family Dental in Pocatello.
