POCATELLO - A local man who used college financial aid money to purchase cocaine had his probation revoked and was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

Robert L. Bowles, 20, was on probation for a 2005 conviction for felony attempting to flee a police officer.

Bowles' current probation officer told Sixth District Judge Peter D. McDermott that he did not believe Bowles could successfully be monitored in the community, while his prior probation officer reminded McDermott that he had told the man a prior violation of probation was his last chance.

Bowles admitted to purchasing an ounce of cocaine during a trip to Salt Lake City. He also admitted driving with another felon, but balked at McDermott's suggestion that he was a drug dealer.

Bowles' attorney noted that Bowles has been reporting to his probation officer regularly, attending Idaho State University full-time and paying restitution. Bowles also pointed out that he had freely admitted to the probation violations in an effort to face up to his drug addiction.

McDermott was unmoved.

"You just can't keep coming back to the trough asking for more chances," McDermott said. "You made your choices."

McDermott then reimposed Bowles' three-year fixed, two-year indeterminate sentence.
