Nevada men's basketball assistant coach Gus Argenal is a candidate to become the next head men's basketball coach at Idaho State, the Journal confirmed Wednesday.

Argenal was on ISU's campus Wednesday, according to ISU Athletic Director Pauline Semons Thiros. He is one of three candidates to be invited to Pocatello for the final stages of the nationwide search for the Bengals' next coach, Semons Thiros said. The other two candidates are unknown by the Journal at this time.

Argenal was one of 13 coaches interviewed for the ISU job during the men's NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis, Semons Thiros said. He had also been linked to the head coaching vacancy at Nevada, but reports Wednesday indicated that Nevada is close to finalizing a deal with Steve Alford to be its head coach.

Argenal has spent the last two seasons at Nevada under former head coach Eric Musselman, who was recently hired to be the head coach at Arkansas. The Wolf Pack have a record of 58-13 with Argenal on the coaching staff and have won the Mountain West Conference's regular-season title each season.

Nevada has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in both seasons with Argenal on staff. The Wolf Pack advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2018.

In a recent story published by nevadasportsnet.com, Argenal is described as "a strong Xs and Os coach who also has played a role in player development and recruiting." The same site credited Argenal with being a "quiet key to Nevada’s success the last two years."

When news broke of Musselman's exit from Nevada, former Wolf Pack stars Caleb Martin, Cody Martin and Jordan Caroline advocated via Twitter for Argenal to be Nevada's next head coach.

Before Nevada, Argenal was the head coach at Division II Cal State East Bay from 2013-17. The Pioneers went 35-76 under Argenal, including a tenure-best mark of 13-15 in Argenal's last season.

Argenal has also been an assistant coach at Rice, UC Davis (twice) and Chico State. He was a graduate assistant coach at Arizona State and was the director of basketball operations at UT San Antonio.

Argenal prepped at De La Salle High School in Concord, California, and played collegiately at UC Davis.
