Day one of the 2018 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships is in the books. The Idaho State teams look to get on the scoreboard as the multi-event competition concludes Wednesday in Moscow.

Women

The Bengals have three competitors in the heptathlon and each are in good position to score team points. Freshman Ashley VanVleet used a first-place finish in the high jump to end the day in third overall with 2,958 points. Her jump of 5 feet, 5.75 inches ties her personal best. VanVleet also finished third in the shot put with a throw of 35-2 throw and took third in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in a personal-best 25.58 seconds.

With 2,830 points, ISU junior Shayla Henderson sits in fifth place. Hendrson’s top finishes on the day were third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.98) and fifth in the high jump, clearing 5-2.25. Henderson finished second in the pentathlon in February at the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Freshman Brianna VanVleet is in seventh place with 2,801 points. Brianna VanVleet tied Henderson in the high jump with a fifth-place leap of 5-2.25 and used a personal-best mark in the shot put of 35-3.75 to finish second in that event.

Men

In the decathlon, Bengals junior James Rodeman used ninth-place finishes in three events to end the day in 11th with a total of 3,201 points, 85 points out of the final scoring spot. Rodeman had a long jump of 20-10.5, a high jump of 5-11.25 and a 400-meter time of 53.46. Senior Tim Ankenman finished seventh in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 37-8.5 before withdrawing from the decathlon due to an injury.

Wednesday

The decathlon begins with the 110-meter hurdles at 10 a.m. followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters. The heptathlon gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with the long jump followed by the javelin and 800 meters.
