Throughout the NFL season, we’ll check in with former Idaho State football players currently in the NFL. Here’s an update after the sixth week of the regular season.
Dirk Koetter (1977, 79-81) and Evan Smith (2004-08)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Head coach Dirk Koetter and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost a back-and-forth game Sunday at Atlanta, 34-29.
After trailing 24-13 at halftime, Tampa Bay outscored Atlanta 16-10 in the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback. The Falcons’ Matt Bryant made a 57-yard field goal with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to increase Atlanta’s lead to 34-29.
Former Idaho State offensive lineman Evan Smith played a reserve role and was on the field for the Bucs’ final drive of the game.
Tampa Bay (2-3) hosts Cleveland on Sunday.
Marvin Lewis (1978-80)
Cincinnati Bengals
Head coach Marvin Lewis and the Cincinnati Bengals lost on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ final offensive play, 28-21 at home Sunday.
Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Brown with 10 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to erase Cincinnati’s 21-20 lead. The ensuing 2-point conversion gave the Steelers a 28-21 advantage.
The Bengals (4-2) are tied atop the AFC North with Baltimore and play Sunday at Kansas City on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.
Josh Hill (2009-12)
New Orleans Saints
Former Idaho State tight end Josh Hill and the New Orleans Saints were on a bye this week. The Saints (4-1) lead the NFC North and play Sunday at Baltimore.
