POCATELLO — There’s a new theater in town, or more accurately, the Bengal Theater at the ISU Pond Student Union has undergone a makeover this past month and will reopen this weekend with the movie, “Hobbs and Shaw” showing at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. today and at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday. The Sunday feature will be Sundance Film Festival winner, “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” showing at 4:30 and 7 p.m.

With temporary screenings of films in the Little Wood River room during the remodel, movie goers will look forward to getting back into the theater to see what the changes are.

“We have all new seating for 300 people,” says Union budget officer Jason Sperry. “The new seats have cup holders, and we put in some new ADA seating and other ADA spots, and we’re really just very excited for the change and look forward to showing some fantastic movies here.” Along with those changes, the floor has been completely resurfaced, and the aisles have new carpeting.

The revamping of the theater has been ongoing for the past few years, with the introduction of the digital video projector, adding new speakers and sound system, and introducing credit card processing. This past winter break, the theater removed some seating to make room for a larger stage, as well as an ADA accessible ramp from the back of the theater to the stage so that the university could host other events in the theater. This introduction of the new seating was the last piece of the puzzle, along with a few other changes.

“In terms of other developments,” Sperry said. “We’ve upgraded surround sound, which will be used for other events and speakers in the theater. We also have new curtains and updated university colors throughout the theater. We are putting in a new screen as well.”

According to Sperry, there will be a couple procedural changes, as well, particularly with the movie times.

“Every Tuesday and Thursday night there will be close captioning, along with the Sunday early shows.” Sperry said. “We are also changing the Saturday showings. Instead of 7 and 9:45 p.m. they are going to be at 4:30 and 7 p.m.” This means there will be movies at 7 p.m. every night of the week (except holidays and breaks), along with 4:30 p.m. shows on Saturday and Sunday, and a 9:45 p.m. show on Fridays.
