BLACKFOOT − It was not easy for Eva Grimm to leave Soda Springs after her freshman year.

She had expected to graduate a Cardinal her entire life and knew little of what her future would hold in Blackfoot.

But what a blessing it turned out to be for Grimm and her family.

The Broncos senior and track and field standout signed her national letter of intent Tuesday at Blackfoot High School to throw discus, shot put and hammer at Utah Valley University.

“When I found out I was moving to Blackfoot, I was a little anxious about it. But I think it was one of the best things that ever happened to me just because the people and the place and for all of the support that I’ve had here,” Grimm told the Post Register.

Grimm concluded her Blackfoot career with an abundance of medals, most notably winning the 2024 4A-5A state championship in discus (126 feet, 1 inch) and reclaiming the title at the 2026 6A-5A state meet with a 144-1 heave.

Broncos throwers coach Matt Bender, who joked his watery eyes were merely from allergies, knows there is no replacing a student-athlete like Grimm.

“Eva’s the type of kid that every coach dreams of coaching. Not just because of her skill, but because of her love and her dedication for the sport,” Bender said.

Next up for Grimm is a trip to Eugene, Oregon, for the Nike Outdoor Nationals later this month. Since she is unable to work on her hammer throws during the high school season, the event will help hone her skills before she suits up for the Wolverines.

“I do like competing in the summers, and it’s more time for me to build up my hammer,” Grimm said. “I would rather be throwing than sitting on the couch.”

Her parents, Lindsay and Brian Grimm, expressed their pride and joy in their daughter’s latest milestone.

“Extremely proud of all the hard work that she’s put into her high school career and all of her accomplishments here and outside of track. She’s just ... a great daughter,” Lindsay said.

“She’s always made everybody feel good and welcome at all the meets as best she could. And nobody ever asked her to,” Brian said.

Grimm had gone on numerous visits and drew interest from a wealth of schools, but it was her trip to Orem that solidified the commitment.

“When I went to UVU and went on that visit, being around the athletes and the coaches and seeing their dynamic and getting to know their personalities and the things that were important to them really, really stuck out to me versus the other places I’d been,” she said.
