POCATELLO — Friends of the Edson Fichter Nature Area have invited the Southeast Idaho community to gather Saturday and learn about the diverse species that live in the southwestern Pocatello nature area.

The collective gathering, known as a bioblitz, is set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the nature area near Indian Hills Elementary School.

The public is encouraged to join local nature experts for a free, fun-filled day of exploration and discovery at the community science event that gives participants the chance to observe and document the rich diversity of life in this beloved natural space, according to a news release from Friends of the Edson Fichter Nature Area

“A bioblitz is a collaborative event where volunteers, scientists and community members team up to record as many species as possible in a specific location within a limited time. The news release said “Participants will learn how to identify and record different species using the iNaturalist app while contributing valuable data to help preserve local ecosystems.” Jane Streubel. president of the Friends of the Edson Fichter Nature Area.

People who come to the bioblitz will be able to document several different types of organisms throughout the day. They will start the day with birds at 8 a.m. before moving on to plants, animals and invertebrates. They will spend two hours documenting each type of organism.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for families, students, and nature lovers to engage with local biodiversity and learn from passionate experts,” Streubel added. “Whether you’re new to nature or a seasoned naturalist, you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for the wildlife in our backyard.”

Participants are encouraged to bring water, sun protection and a smartphone or tablet for recording observations. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
