The Idaho State football team received a verbal commitment from W.F. West High School (Chehalis, Wash.) quarterback Tanner Gueller.

    The 6-foot-3, 225-pound signal caller tweeted Friday night, "Excited to share that I have committed to play QB at Idaho State. So grateful for this opportunity! #GoBengals”

    Gueller led the Bearcats to a 9-2 overall record as a senior at W.F. West High School. He threw for 2,435 yards with 36 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added 768 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

    The ISU coaching staff offered Gueller a scholarship Wednesday and he committed Friday after head coach Mike Kramer came to his basketball game.

    “Coach (Sheldon) Cross, the receivers coach, came to my basketball game the week before and I met with him afterwards,” Gueller said. “They told me things were going to move fast. I was excited. I got the call that I had the offer a few days later and I took it.”

    Gueller also drew interest from North Dakota, San Diego and some Division II schools. Idaho State was his first offer at the FCS level.

    “I was hoping it was going to be them the whole time,” he said.

    What about Idaho State intrigued Gueller?

    “I know they threw the ball a ton,” he said. “What quarterback doesn't want to chuck the ball a lot? Other than that, I know Jared Allen went there. I started looking into it then and saw the offense they run is just like what I ran in high school.”

    Kramer’s track record also drew Gueller’s interest.

    “He built two programs,” he said. “He's a good coach and knows how to build programs. He knows what he's doing and it will be great to be a part of something big.”

    Gueller said he will visit Pocatello and the university next weekend. He also said his commitment to ISU ends the recruiting process.

    “Once I commit, it's done,” he said. “I'm a Bengal.”
