The story just keeps getting better.

The Idaho State freshman born and raised in American Falls was named to Mexican Women’s National Team roster for the 2015 World Cup.

Sanchez tweeted out the news Wednesday evening.

ISU coach Allison Gibson tweeted, “So incredibly proud of and excited for Maria Sanchez for being named to the Mexican World Cup Roster!!!!!”

Sanchez was sitting at her home in American Falls when she received an email Wednesday indicating she made the team. The email also had her plane reservation attached to it to begin training camp for the upcoming World Cup.

Sanchez leaves Friday for Mexico for training and the team will depart the last day of May for Canada.

Sanchez dressed with the Mexican national team last week in matches against Canada and the United States. Sanchez played 30 minutes versus Canada but did not step on the field for the game against the U.S.

“My family is really proud of me,” Sanchez said. “They couldn’t afford to put me on the big club teams so they are proud what I am doing with the resources I have.”

It was only two months ago that Sanchez was hurrying down to Los Angeles to try out for Mexico’s Under-20 team. She left a big enough impression with the coaching staff that she was called up to the national team in late April.

Ever since, Sanchez had been fighting to land a spot on Mexico’s roster to travel with the squad to the World Cup in June. Mexico’s first game is against Colombia on June 9 at Moncton Stadium in New Brunswick, Canada.

“I think we keep using the term ‘dream come true,’” Gibson told the Journal on April 30. “It truly is with her. She’s worked so hard for this. It’s funny because I know it was a dream, but I don’t know if she worked toward it thinking it was a reality.”

Sanchez, who will return to play for the Bengals this fall, has said she wasn’t sure if she would actually make Mexico’s team for the World Cup. But she was embracing the process and loved that every day she was waking up and playing soccer.

“This is a big achievement,” Sanchez said. “I never imagined it would happen this quick. It is such a big accomplishment, especially because I am so young.”
