PARK CITY, Utah — Nobody has any idea who’s going to win the Big Sky Conference this season.

The three-time defending champions (Eastern Washington) lost star quarterback Vernon Adams after he transferred to Oregon. The winningest program in league history (Montana) has a new coach. And the team that might have the best quarterback (Montana State) couldn’t stop anyone on defense a season ago.

Where does that leave Idaho State? Everybody likes an underdog story, but no one is willing to bet on the Bengals.

ISU was No. 6 in the coaches’ poll and No. 4 in the media poll released Tuesday by the Big Sky during the 2015 conference media days. In 2014, the Bengals were 12th and 10th, respectively.

Montana State was No. 1 in the coaches’ poll and Eastern Washington leaped to No. 1 in the media poll.

The Bobcats and Eagles both received six first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. MSU edged EWU by a point in the final tally. They each had 17 votes for first in the media poll, but Eastern flipped to the top thanks to 553 overall points, 12 more than Montana State.

The Bengals had 446 points and five first-place votes in the media poll, 13 points behind the third-place Montana Grizzlies, who were tabbed third by the coaches.

Need any proof for how difficult Idaho State’s schedule looks? The Bengals host each of the preseason’s top three teams and travel to the Cal Poly Mustangs, the No. 4 squad in the coaches’ poll and No. 5 in the media.

ISU also plays Portland State (No. 9 in the coaches’ poll, No. 12 media), North Dakota (No. 9/No. 9), Sacramento State (No. 7/No. 7) and Weber State (No. 11/No. 10).

It’s a challenging conference slate with road trips to far-flung Big Sky outposts Grand Forks, North Dakota, and San Luis Obispo, California, in back-to-back weeks.

There are also non-conference dates with Boise State, UNLV and Black Hills State.

It can’t get here soon enough.

“Win every game,” said Bengals coach Mike Kramer. “Beat Boise State at Boise. Shock the world.”
