James Prockish has been all over the west in the last week and a half.

After graduating from Idaho State with his biology degree, Prockish went to Los Angeles for a baseball tryout, then back to Idaho to collect his things, and finally landed in Monterey, California, which he’ll call home for at least the next three months.

Prockish, who played two seasons on Idaho State’s club baseball team and one season with the Gate City Grays, signed a season-long contract on May 11 in Los Angeles to play for the Monterey Amberjacks of the Pecos League.

“It meant everything to get there,” Prockish told the Journal on Wednesday by phone. “I’ve been dreaming of being a pro baseball player ever since I was a little kid.”

Prockish played catcher and third base for the Grays last season, helping the team win its second consecutive Northern Utah League championship. Prockish hit .324 with nine RBIs and 16 runs in 22 games last season.

The Amberjacks are a first-year franchise in the 12-team Pecos League, which features four other teams that were founded this year.

The Pecos League is also home to the Alpine Cowboys, with whom former Grays and ISU club team player Sean Persky signed in March.

Prockish said Persky’s signing was part of his inspiration to pursue baseball beyond the Gate City.

“It lit a fire under me,” Prockish said. “He helped me out a lot with finding tryouts and everything like that.”

Prockish went to the Amberjacks’ one-day tryout in Los Angeles and was approached with a contract the same day. He has been with the team at spring training as they ready for the May 25 season opener. The Amberjacks and Cowboys do not play each other, as they participate in different divisions within the Pecos League.

Prockish, a Coeur d’Alene native, played two years at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and has seen his baseball talents take him to yet another time zone. He thanked Grays co-owner Terry Fredrickson for his support through his process and highlighted his lone season on Gate City as a standout memory.

“It was amazing,” Prockish said. “I love the Grays. If I didn’t make (another team), I’d be there playing right now.”
