Cooper Cooke leads the field in bareback riding at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
The Victor cowboy rode twice Wednesday, closing the first go-round with a score of 82 to win the round in the 9 a.m. session. He kicked off the evening performance with a 70-point ride, which led the second go-round as of Wednesday night.
Cooke, who won the Idaho state all-around title earlier this summer, is first in the average at nationals with 152 points.
Wendell’s Braydon Roe won two performances Wednesday. The tie-down roper achieved a 9.15-second tie to win Wednesday’s morning performance, and followed it with a 9.71 to finish first among Wednesday’s evening performers.
The Idaho state runner-up finished third in the first go-round standings and led the second go as of Wednesday night. He’s also first in the average.
Menan cowgirl Ryland Lufkin also competed twice Wednesday. She clocked a 18.098-second ride in barrel racing to close the first go in the morning, and notched a 17.957 during the evening performance. Lufkin was in ninth place in the second go-round standings Wednesday night.
Idaho is second place in the boys team standings with 3,000 points — 575 behind first-place Texas. The Idaho girls are in 11th place, giving team Idaho an overall standing of third through Wednesday’s events.
