SUGAR CITY — Early Monday morning a man apparently needing a lot of fresh air was recorded walking naked through a Sugar City neighborhood.

A woman living in that neighborhood was reviewing footage from her home security camera when she came across the image of the man walking through — sans clothing.

“In the early morning hours of July 6, a Sugar City resident called us and said that she had been reviewing her home camera,” said Madison County Sheriff Ron Ball. “About 2 a.m. the camera picked up an individual out on the street walking past the houses naked. It was a naked man.”

Ball described the man as being white with dark hair. Deputies didn’t notice any other identifying marks, such as tattoos.

“Officers are looking into trying to identify the individual to see what purpose he had walking around Sugar City without any clothes on in the middle of the night,” the sheriff said.

Ball was at a loss to explain the incident.

“It’s concerning to us,” he said. “It’s obviously out of the normal behavior of anybody.”

He suggested there are simply people who like to do strange things.

“We don’t know what the purpose was or what he was doing,” Ball said. “That’s why we’re investigating this case. Some people will get a laugh out of it, but what was the purpose? That’s why we’re interested in finding out who this individual was. A serious side to this is, ‘Why was somebody doing this?’ We don’t know who it is, but we want to know what his intent was. That’s why the case is being followed up on.”

Ball said the man didn’t appear to be drunk.

“It’s not like he was stumbling down and that he was intoxicated,” he said. “He just walks normal. Who knows?”

To protect the person who reported the incident, Ball declined to specify which Sugar City street the man was recorded walking down.

Ball admitted the incident was unusual but said his years in police work mean little surprises him anymore.

“Is it unusual, yes, but to say I’m totally surprised, I don’t know if I could say that,” the sheriff said. “When you think you’ve seen it all, something else happens. We need to find this guy and figure out why he was doing it, so it doesn’t happen anymore.”
