AMERICAN FALLS — An 81-year-old Bend, Oregon, man has died from the result of injuries he sustained in a wrong-way head-on collision on Interstate 86 in American Falls Wednesday evening.
Louis Thomas was killed while driving a 2014 Honda Civic sedan eastbound in the westbound lanes of travel on Interstate 86 when he collided with a 35-year-old woman from Santa Maria, California, who was traveling westbound, authorities said.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was driving a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan when the collision occurred around 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.
The collision happened right near the lanes of travel on the Interstate 86 westbound on-ramp of exit 40 in American Falls, according to authorities.
Thomas succumbed to his injuries on scene and the California woman was transported via ground ambulance to a local hospital.
The Power County Sheriff’s Office and Power County Emergency Medical Services assisted Idaho State Police in responding to the incident.
The westbound lanes of I-86 were blocked for approximately 4 hours and state police continue to investigate the collision.
