MALAD — The 34-year-old Pocatello man who died at the scene of a Tuesday evening crash on Interstate 15 near Malad leaves behind a 3-year-old son, his family says.

The Idaho State Journal on Wednesday spoke to the family of the 34-year-old man, Francisco “Junior” Julian Medina, who died after he was ejected from a vehicle during a single-vehicle crash.

Idaho State Police are investigating the crash, which occurred at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday south of Malad in Oneida County.

Damien LeFevre, 29, of North Logan, Utah, was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra southbound on I-15 when he drove off the right shoulder and over-corrected, causing the vehicle to roll across the lanes, authorities said. It came to rest in the median on its top.

LeFevre was not wearing his seatbelt and was transported by air ambulance to the hospital. He is currently listed in stable condition at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Medina was riding as a passenger in the truck and was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, state police said. He died at the scene.

Medina’s family described him as the type of person who always had a smile on his face — a free-spirited man who absolutely loved his family wholeheartedly. Even when facing adversity, Medina would always try and make the people around him feel loved, his family said.

“My favorite thing about Junior is his optimism and how no matter how bad he was feeling he managed to still make others laugh and feel good,” said his sister, Shannell Hernandez. “He was a loving brother, son and father and he will be terribly missed.”

An online fundraiser has been started to both help with funeral expenses and also provide some support to Medina’s 3-year-old son, Estevan, according to Medina’s family.

“I’m at a loss right now,” one of Medina’s relatives told the Journal on Wednesday. “We don’t have the money to give him a proper funeral right now so everything helps at this time.”

The GoFundMe, accessible by visiting gofund.me/dbe25c64, has raised $500 of its $7,000 goal since it was created Wednesday afternoon.

“I can hear Junior telling everyone he is ok and probably making a joke too soon,” the online fundraiser said. “We all loved his energy and the way he made everyone laugh. A loving, outgoing and fun son, father, brother and friend. You will forever be missed and never forgotten.”
