Portneuf River

The icy Portneuf River pictured on Friday in Pocatello.

POCATELLO — The Fire Department is strongly encouraging people to stay away from the Portneuf River because of the danger presented by the thin layer of ice coating much of the waterway.

The ice is not thick enough to support people or their pets.

The Fire Department wants to get the word out that under no circumstances should anyone walk on the river’s ice or allow pets to venture onto the ice.

Because tragedy could be the result.
