Monday's temperatures could be in the upper 90s in East Idaho, prompting the National Weather Service to declare an extreme heat warning and heat advisory.

Among those most at risk during the hot weather are children and pets.

"Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the National Weather Service said. "This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

The areas with the hottest temperatures on Monday are expected to be Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Shoshone, Pocatello, Chubbuck, Blackfoot, Fort Hall, American Falls, Aberdeen, Arbon, Malad, Malta, Oakley, Rockland, Atomic City, Raft River, Dayton, Weston and Preston.

Anyone who will be outdoors or who does not have air conditioning needs to take precautions.

"An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur," the weather service said. "The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors."

The weather service continued, "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.... Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water."

The weather service is urging anyone who feels like they are becoming ill because of the heat to dial 911 immediately.

The hottest temperatures in East Idaho will be during the day on Monday and temps Monday night are expected to cool down to about 65 degrees.

Elsewhere in Idaho, the Twin Falls and Jerome areas are also under a heat advisory for Monday calling for possible temps in the upper 90s.
